Star*Fest 2007
by Stormy on April 21, 2007

Another science-fiction convention in Denver with the usual crowd of scary fans and big name stars. And one marmot.

Today I went to the 2007 Star*Fest convention in Denver, CO. The guest of honor was Leonard Nimoy with a supporting cast of Rachel Luttrell, Oded Fehr, Kate Vernon, Gil Gerard, Erin Gray, Daniel Logan, Andee Frizzell, Ray Park, Mark Steven Grove and many others. Star*Fest conventions in particular are big and crowded and very busy. I got to crawl most of the convention over the course of the day and that left me pretty worn out. One of the highlights was going to a lecture by Dr. Joshua Colwell from the University of Central Florida and Dr. Steven Lee from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science that talked about ongoing exploration of Saturn and Mars. A lot of news and technology were presented and some interesting tidbits were divulged, making the crowd go wild. I've heard Dr. Lee's lectures at the museum before and his talks are always very exciting. He manages to put the audience right there on Mars as the rovers are exploring the planet. Dr. Colwell doesn't get to go down to the surface of Saturn or Saturn's moons, but he does have a lot of flybys of Cassini and a fascinating diversity of planetary surfaces from this space giant and associated moons. The 2007 STARFLEET International Conference table was pretty busy all day. I stopped by a few times to visit my friends there. At one point the fire alarms went off for an unknown reason and the Denver Fire Department showed up. Most of the convention attendees did not realize that this was the real fire department and thought that it was a bunch of convention attendees dressed up in firefighter gear walking around the convention floor, pretending like they're doing work. The sad reality of the entire event was that the firefighters probably were pretending that they are doing work. Even they couldn't help being curious about the convention! The stars, as always, had a lot of stories to tell and signed autographs for fans. In the evening I went to the Federation Ball where a lot of people showed up and danced late into the night. I had a great time!

It was black and shiny. No one really sure what it was supposed to be because it refused to talk, but it did pose with Stormy. And it's back and shiny, so you can't go wrong there.

No kidding. The fire department was real. While they checked out the convention, Stormy checked out the Denver Fire Department's truck. It looked good.

"Night at the Museum" is coming out on DVD. 20th Century Fox had a display at the convention...

...Stormy got to pose with a "smaller than life" T-Rex that terrorized the museum.

It turns out that Michael Myers from "Halloween" has tremendous musical ability. Stormy paused to listen to a master musician play. Sadly, the musician is also a serial killer...

Life in the desert is tough. But even desert warriors love marmots!

Stormy got invited to a luau! Turns out the cannibals were having a beach party. One of their own was the guest of honor. Eeeck!

It turned out that the fire alarm remained a mystery and after the fire department left, the Ghostbusters showed up to see if they could help.

Rumor has it that "Fluffy" is a Borg tribble. It told Stormy he'd be assimilated.

Stormy got a souvenir. The 2007 STARFLEET International Conference will run a poker tournament. One of the proof chips was given to the marmot as a souvenir.
