Furry Scurry 2007
by Stormy on May 05, 2007

It's the Furry Scurry, a fund raiser for the Dumb Friends League, a premier animal shelter in the Rocky Mountain area.

The first Saturday in May is always the Furry Scurry in Denver. It attracts thousands of people and thousands of dogs for a 2 mile fun run/walk to raise money for the shelter. This is the biggest animal charity walk in the United States! The event isn't just limited to dogs. All animals are welcome to attend, but animal beware! Thousands of dogs could make for a dangerous place! Still, you're liable to see something else wander by that may appear out of place -- a cat riding in a backpack, a parakeet on someone's shoulder, a potbellied pig waddling along their owner or just a goldfish in a jar. The Dumb Friends League -- "dumb" here does not mean stupid, it means "mute" -- was founded in 1910 and has since then grown to be the largest animal welfare organization in the Rocky Mountain region. Each year they take in tens of thousands of injured and abandoned animals of any breed, nurse them back to health and adopt them out into the community. This sort of work is expensive and starting in 1995 the Dumb Friends League has held an annual animal walk/run to help raise money for their operations. The fact that thousands of attendees show up at the event is a tribute to the fact that the DFL's mission is successful. Many of the animals who come are alumni of the shelter and through their owners' generous contributions make the organization's work possible. As in years past, I hung out at the registration table. People are a little nervous about a marmot handling their credit cards, but they do think that being greeted by one is cute. Registration is always a busy place on event day! 2007 was another successful year for this event. The Furry Scurry grows in size every year.

KUSA Channel 9 is an annual co-sponsor of the event. The weather segments of their morning telecast are done from the Furry Scurry every year.

KYGO, a country music radio station, also broadcasts from the event. Note Stormy trying to peek in the window to see if there are any stars inside!

Hill's Science Diet brought a truck full of goodies! Turns out Hill's doesn't make Marmot Chow. Stormy checked.

Rickenbaugh brought in an antique car to be the pace vehicle at the start. Marmots don't need a driver's license to drive old cars!

An ambulance was on standby for any emergencies. Fortunately none happened and Stormy got to check the vehicle out instead.

The most exciting vehicle at the event was BART, the Big Animal Rescue Truck, from Code 3 Associates. The "Big" is for the truck, not the type of animals it rescues.

BART is a 70+ foot long vehicle. Can you spot the super small marmot here?

In the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, BART was deployed to Louisiana and Mississippi to support rescue efforts. They are credited with saving thousands of animals.

BART is home for many vehicles, including the mobile search and rescue SUV. Behind the SUV you can also see the horse trailer.

Inside BART is very roomy. It can house dozens of animals, has a field hospital and tons of gear. Note the boat hanging above.

There is a horse trailer in BART for the evacuation of large animals.

For some reason any time someone sees a stray marmot, they have to grab it and strap it to a gurney!

There was one animal at the Furry Scurry that defies classification.
