Climbing the Walls
by Star on June 23, 2007

The Holy Cross Wilderness isn't a world renowned climbing area, but there are some great places to climb here. A wide variety of granite and limestone terrain offers a great variety of places to explore.

As groups split up in the early morning hours, each planning their adventure, I thought it would be fun to try a little mountain climbing. I found a challenging looking rock off the beaten path and figured I'd give it a go. Vertical walls can be a challenge to man and beast alike. You have to plan your route, test your strength and, most importantly, never look down. A good climb will take a few hours. Plan on breaking a few nails and maybe getting a scrape or two. But a successful climb is very rewarding in itself. Standing at the top of your chosen cliff you get a rush of exhilaration, knowing that you accepted nature's challenge and succeeded.
