Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day by Stormy on January 25, 2010
We all know Bubble Wrap. A lot of things we ship or receive come wrapped in it. But where did Bubble Wrap come from?
I think that all of us at one time or another had a few extra minutes when we’d just lean back with a sheet of Bubble Wrap and pop the bubbles. Be it relaxing or aggressive behavior, it’s a common act for all of us and I think all of us remember the Bubble Wrap always being there to play with. But there has to be a time that Bubble Wrap first came to be, yes?
January 25 is Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day. A product of Sealed Air Brand, Bubble Wrap came about back in 1960 when Marc Chavannes and Al Fielding developed air filled plastic sheets in hopes of revolutionizing the wallpaper market with a “textured” look. Needless to say, air-filled walls did not take off, but then Chavannes and Fielding realized that the material they developed was great for padding things during shipping.
Over the years Bubble Wrap served many varied functions ranging from self-therapy to flotation devices to sleeping bag liners to clothing to art. Many other innovative types of safety packaging have been created, but time after time Bubble Wrap proves itself to be a timeless material which will help you get your breakables from one place to another safely.
We at Marmot Adventures are pleased to wish Bubble Wrap a happy fiftieth birthday. After all, many of us here have traveled in Bubble Wrap ourselves!
