Groundhog Day 2012 by Stormy on February 02, 2012
Got a call from Phil. He says that winter isn't over.
I talked with Punxsutawney Phil this morning and he's pretty determined that we're not done with winter yet. On the surface it sounds right. There's a big storm coming in Colorado. They're predicting ~36 hours of snow with 18 inches falling over that time. Sure sounds like winter is not giving up. But a good prognosticator has to do his own homework, so I waited two hours past Phil's prediction until the sun began to rise over Colorado. I even climbed to a high vantage point to get an earlier view.
As the sky began to brighten, I could see low clouds on the eastern horizon with just enough of an opening to hint that there may be some sun. "Hmmm… Phil might be right." But as the sky brightened, the sun never came. It stayed gloomy and dreary and the clouds only got grayer. I patiently waited, but to no avail. I have to call it and I'm leaning away from my buddy Phil's opinion. It has to be early spring.
It's easy to get sucked into a human forecaster's mindset and with a big storm coming and all, you can argue that winter is coming on strong, but the traditional indicators just aren't there. It'll definitely be an early spring. And I look forward to munching on fresh flowers in the meadow.
